Congolese soldier in Flanders' Fields colorized

Description

One of the under 32 Congolese soldiers (all volunteers by the way) who served in the Belgian army on the western front. Unlike the other allied countries, Belgium never used colonial troops in the west, they felt that they could be put to better use in Africa to fight German colonial forces. Also, they didn't want to add an extra element to the already difficult linguistic situation between Flemmings and francophones. The reason some Congolese soldiers served on the western front is that they were present in Belgium at the start of the war because: e.g. they were employed here with their boss etc. A piece of little known history, even within Belgium

Interesting. At first, I thought about why the Belgians simply didn't bring in more colonial troops to reinforce the Yser Front - similar to how the French brought in colonial forces from French North and West Africa - but your description provided insight as to why. I wonder how the Western Front would have been affected by more Congolese troops being shipped to the Yser Front following the capture of German East and South West Africa. Would it have been any different or would the Belgians be forced to continue defending?
